Understanding the impact of social media on travellers’ travel plans, and improving travellers’ experience

Through researching social medias to find out and solve some existing problems of social media sites to improve user experience

2.1 Research Question:

What impact has social media had on travellers and the travel industry, and how can we improve traveller’s experience?

Apps and websites (social media) now provide users with useful information, enable people to share new services, and change the way people travel. In addition, ZhuoliWang (2022) shows that with the increasing popularity of mobile apps, not only travel apps such as Tripadvisor, but also multi-functional social media and content apps (” comprehensive social apps “) have become popular platforms for people to share their travel experience. Examples of such integrated social applications include Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. These software or websites broaden information sources for tourists (Sotiriadis&Van Zyl, 2013).

Motivation

The tourism industry is of great value and provides a large number of jobs for people. Zhang Zhaozhi (2010)’s report points out that traditional tourism is a labor-intensive industry. Although tourism has created a lot of jobs, some highly skilled people are reluctant to choose these jobs due to low profits. But in recent years the combination of information technology and traditional tourism has created a new kind of tourism, with more jobs available. It also requires more skilled people and is more profitable.

Although information technology has brought many conveniences and benefits to the tourism industry. Because there is so much information online. It is difficult for users to find really useful information, and there are a lot of fake information to interfere with the user’s decision. Leading to some bad effects.

With the development of science and technology, information technology is often used in the tourism industry. BenxiangZeng (2014) shows the increasing role of social media in the travel industry, especially in information collection and travel decision making. Over the past few years, there has been a breakthrough growth in the use of social media sites and applications. The social networking site Facebook claims to have more than 500 million active users worldwide, 50% of whom log in every day. With so much user participation, social media has become an important factor influencing consumer behavior (Fotis, J., Buhalis, D., & Rossides, N. 2011).

However, the information on the Internet is too disordered. According to the research of Sungwoo Choi, some merchants will post fake comments online to induce consumers to consume, or some consumers will post some fake comments with malicious emotions, which will lead to losses for merchants. Therefore, it is urgent to make some improvements on social media to better regulate comments.

At the same time, in order to prevent publishers’ articles from being stolen, managers have to sacrifice the user’s experience of browsing information, such as the inability to copy the address information, resulting in users having to constantly switch software or enter a long list of ground search. It is necessary to study these functions to improve user experience for the increasing use of social media in the tourism industry.

5.1 For the part of the report

First of all, we need to understand what social media is, what social media includes, and what are the mainstream social software now? What’s the difference between them and a travel rating app (because I think a travel rating app like Tripadvisor is better used during a trip to give travelers advice on where to find local amenities, usually when the trip is already planned, while social media provides a new idea for the trip planning, or provides a platform for sharing travel content, People often get the idea to travel when they look at other people’s travel photos on social media, before they even make travel plans. So, they both have an impact on travel planning but they’re different things).

And then talk about how these software and websites change people’s travel plans. What’s the impact? And finally find out what improvements can be made in social software right now?

5.2 About the code section

Student plan to design a social website (or app) for travelers. and add 2 or 3 more features(Be optional).

(Possible)Function 1:

Small picture message function, now social media comments if there is unfair situation. In the comments section, users can send pictures or other evidence to support the statement and make it more credible. Just in case this feature is misused, the comments section is too cluttered. manager can put some restrictions on functionality, such as only needed.
